Una vez se suponía que se había compuesto en 1775 (cuando Mozart tenía 19 años), junto con los otros cuatro conciertos para violín totalmente auténticos. Sin embargo, el análisis de la escritura a mano y el papel manuscrito en el que se escribió el concierto sugieren que la fecha de composición podría haber sido 1773. Tiene la estructura habitual de rápido-lento-rápido.
