En 1849 Schumann publicó seis Impromptus para piano a cuatro manos con el título "Bilder aus Osten". Como se puede ver en el prefacio de la primera edición, Schumann se inspiró en la "Maqama", un género de prosa árabe rima, del poeta medieval Hariri en la traducción de Friedrich Rückert. Schumann no pudo desterrar al protagonista de Maqama, Abu Said, a quien comparó con el personaje alemán Till Eulenspiegel de sus pensamientos.
